Some of the biggest kept secrets in the film industry right now are those surrounding Star Wars. We don’t know an awful lot about the next entry into the Star Wars saga (Is Rey a Kenobi? Is Snoke secretly Nien Nunb?!) But one thing we do know now is the official title for Episode 8.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
I love this name. It’s so simple yet so complex at the same time that has provoked a number of different discussions, arguments and theories online. Sure the complexity of the title comes from the speculation that we generate, but Disney knows exactly how we would react and they know exactly what they are doing.
Does this refer to a singular Jedi or multiple Jedi? Does it mean that Luke is the last of the Jedi or does it also refer to Rey? I personally think it’s pretty straight forward and is relating to Luke Skywalker being the last, sure Rey is in training but she is not a fully-fledged Jedi as of yet. I also think that the build up to Luke Skywalker’s reveal in The Force Awakens merits a lot of screen time for Luke in the next chapter.
What also makes food for thought is the use of the red font in title, which automatically returns your mind back to 1982 with the first reveal of the ‘Revenge of the Jedi’ title. This of course was later changed to ‘Return of the Jedi’, but that movie was seriously darker and more serious than the earlier entries, in some cases.
Is this hinting at a darker or more serious movie that The Force Awakens? Could it possibly be hinting at Luke’s struggle with the Dark Side or even Rey for that matter? Perhaps Kathleen Kennedy just really likes red.
The burning question is however, what do YOU think about the reveal of the Star Wars title? Do you think we will get a trailer before celebration? Let me know in the comment below, or hit me up on Twitter at any time.
