So 2016 came and went, and with it came a slew of phenomenal movies, and some not so greats ones, 2017 however looks to be phenomenal. The following movies are some of my most anticipated movies of the upcoming year. They are in no particular order other than release date, so think of this as more of a laid back list and not an official top 10. These are the movies that I am most hyped about, it’s not to say that these are the only movies I’m looking forward to there are many many more that I cannot wait to see or have peaked my interest, but these movies are the ones that spring to mind. So with all the housekeeping out of the way, let’s jump into…
Now this may be because I’m Scottish, but T2: Trainspotting looks to be a spectacular return to form from the Trainspotting cast and crew. Sure there has been a run of really bad, long overdue sequels (I’m looking at you Zoolander), but this seems to be a sequel that has a purpose, as opposed to just being a sequel for the sake of being a sequel. The fact that the original screenwriter, director, cast and crew are all returning shows how much faith and passion they have for this movie, and is certainly something I cannot wait to see.
T2: Trainspotting will be released on January 27th in UK and wider release in March.
John Wick: Chapter 2
John Wick was a movie that came out of nowhere as being a complete and utter cinematic surprise. Keanu Reeve’s John ‘coming-out-of-retirement-for-one-last-job revenge’ Wick cemented itself as one of the best action movies of the past 10 years, with some of the best fight scenes of choreography that I have seen in a long, long time. It put Keanu back on the map as someone who means business, so the addition of a Chapter 2 to John Wick’s story is something I would eat off the ground with a rusty spoon. I mean I’d much rather see it in a nice cinema, but if that was the only option I would take it.
John Wick: Chapter 2 will be released on February 2nd.
Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine comes in the form of Logan, a much darker, deeper and emotional take on the X-Men franchise than what we’ve had so far. The trailer for this movie was one of the best of 2016, and it came as such a difference and surprise, that it completely caught me off guard. Sure I was excited for another Wolverine movie, but I never thought I would be this excited. Not only will it be an epic tale of superheroes and villains, but it looks to be a phenomenal story driven, character developing piece of cinema.
Logan will be released on March 3rd.
Kong: Skull Island
Now I don’t know about you, but I adored Gareth Edward’s Godzilla, in fact I think it might be one of the best Godzilla movies we’ve had. Now that we are getting a shared universe with the might King Kong himself however, makes this arrangement very exciting indeed. I have enjoyed previous incarnations of King Kong, Peter Jackson’s for example was great if the first 45 minutes was chopped off, but this one just gets me so much more excited for an ape movie than I ever have been before. I can’t wait to see how this movie plays out, and get a glimpse at what the King of Monsters himself will be going up against in a few years.
Kong: Skull Island will be released on March 9th.
Guardian’s of the Galaxy Vol. 2
It’s safe to say that Guardian’s of the Galaxy was a massive surprise hit for Marvel. James Gunn brought us a group of weirdos and misfits, and created a space opera of epic proportions that completely blew our minds. We fell in loves with all of our beloved Guardian’s, and with a Vol. 2 on the way we can fall even deeper in love with a talking raccoon and a little baby tree. (Look at him!)
Guardian’s of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released April 28th.
Diana Prince, the Amazonian princess herself, is finally make her big screen (solo) debut in July, which I cannot wait for. Wonder Woman may just be my favourite DC hero, and for a live action portrayal of the Wonder is certainly something that gets me beyond excited. Gal Gadot has grown on me in the role even since she was first announced, and she is arguably one of the best parts of Batman V Superman last year, so her first solo outing (set during WW1 no less) should be nothing short of spectacular.
Wonder Woman will be released on June 2nd.
Similar to Wonder Woman, Spider-Man was arguably the best of part Captain America: Civil War (although Civil War was a much better movie) so to see him in his first solo outing under the Marvel umbrella is surely going to be amazing! Tom Holland seems to have this character nailed down, from the small amount of screen time we’ve actually seen of him, which can only mean good things when he’s given more time to play the character. The fact that this is also officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe make me feel that little bit more complete inside.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on July 7th.
Some people don’t really enjoy the Thor movies in comparison to the others in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while I can see why, I think they are some of the most fun and ‘out there’ movies that we’ve had. Thor: Ragnarok seems to be pushing those boundaries once again by taking us into the vast depths of space, with a Hulk, an Elder of the Universe, and Hela herself. Not only will we see our favourite Asgardian roaming the vast openness of space he will be accompanied by the one and only Hulk, who rumour has it will be showing Thor a thing or two in a World War Hulk-like scenario.
Thor: Ragnarok will be released October 27th.
It’s no secret that the DC Cinematic Universe, or the Extended Universe, or whatever it may be called, hasn’t exactly got off to a good start. No that’s not fair, a great start. Now I have enjoyed all 3 movies in this universe so far, some of aspects in the actual movies were pretty darn great, but overall they haven’t quite been amazing. I’ve got faith that Wonder Woman will start to turn that around since that’s the first proper movie to be released under the leadership of Geoff Johns, but it’s DC’s first proper superhero team up that a lot of people attention will be turned too. This is one that I’ll be seeing opening night, and hopefully I’ll want to see it a lot more afterwards.
Justice League will be released November 17th.
Star Wars: Episode 8
This one is a no brainer. The Force Awakens was my favourite movie of 2015, Rogue One was also pretty fantastic, so I have nothing but faith that Disney will continue to do this franchise justice. In the hands of Riann Johnston, in the universe we love with the characters we want more of, Episode 8 has the potential of being the best Star Wars movie yet. Oh and a lil ol’ Jedi by the name of Skywalker will only sweeten the deal that bit more.
Star Wars: Episode 8 will be released on December 15th.
But hey, that’s just some of the movies that I’m looking forward to this year, but there are hundreds more to keep your eyes peeled for and your interests peaked. What are some of the most anticipated movies on YOUR lists, and what’s some that you think I should see that perhaps I haven’t mentioned here?
