The Oscars 2016 – The Winners!

So The Oscars happened last night, and our boy Leo has finally done it. That spot on his mantelpiece will be a little less lonely from now on, but that wasn’t the only deserved win last night. Here is a list of all winners of the major nominations, and a little bit from me on how I feel about each win!

Best Actor:

Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant – Winner!
Matt Damon – The Martian
Michael Fassbender – Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne – The Danish Girl
Bryan Cranston – Trumbo

A well deserved win from Leo, which he can finally score from his to-do list. All the actors in this list were fantastic this year, and if it wasn’t Leo, I think it should have went to Matt Damon or Michael Fassbender, but I am over the moon for Leo, and hopefully this is the first of many to come.

Best Actress:

Brie Larson – Room – Winner!
Cate Blanchett – Carol
Jennifer Lawrence – Joy
Charlotte Rampling – 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan – Brooklyn

Again another well deserved win in the Best Actress category. Room was one of my favourite movies of last year, and it effected me a lot more than I thought it would. Brie Larson was fantastic in the lead role, which left me almost hyperventilating during to the point where I thought I would have to leave the cinema. Cate Blanchett in Carol also delivered a fantastic performance.

Best Picture:

Spotlight – Winner!
The Revenant
The Martian
The Big Short
Room
Mad Max: Fury Road
Brooklyn
Bridge of Spies

For me, best picture was either Room or Mad Max: Fury Road, but that is only because I haven’t seen the winner of this years award (shock horror!), but now I fully intend of seeing it. It wasn’t something I didn’t want to see, actually it was on my list and I was scheduled in to see it, but life happened and now it’s something I shall be rectifying soon.

Best Director:

Alejandro Gonzales Inarritú – The Revenant – Winner!
Adam McKay – The Big Short
George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road
Tom McCarthy – Spotlight
Lenny Abrahamson – Room

All of these movies were very well directed, but for me it was a toss up between Mad Mad, and The Revenant, which were both beautifully directed. If either one of those movies had one I would have been over the moon, but the effort that was put in to The Revenant is phenomenal. Not to say George Miller did not put a lot of effort in, the action scenes and cinematography in Mad Max is outstanding, and I would have felt the same way if that had won over The Revenant. Two in a row for Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu, can he make it a third?

Best Supporting Actor:

Mark Rylance – Bridge of Spies – Winner!
Christian Bale – The Big Short
Tom Hardy – The Revenant
Mark Ruffalo – Spotlight
Sylvester Stallone – Creed

Similar to the Best Picture winner, I have not seen Bridge of Spies, but I have heard good things about it, and that Mark Rylance was the best part of the movie. I am so happy to see Sylvester Stallone nominated, and would have loved to see him win, but for me I was expecting Tom Hardy to take the statue home, he delivered such a powerful and menacing performance in The Revenant.

Best Supporting Actress:

Alicia Vikander – The Danish Girl – Winner!
Jennifer Jason Leigh – The Hateful Eight
Rachel McAdams – Spotlight
Rooney Mara – Carol
Kate Winslet – Steve Jobs

Again another well deserved win in this category, but all that were nominated were fantastic this year, especially Rooney Mara in Carol. After the performance Alicia Vikander gave us in Ex Machina, I am happy she was nominated and then went on to win.

The rest of the nominations and wins will be posted below, these were just the main categories that I wanted to share my thoughts and feelings on. A big surprise, but a pleasant one, was how many Oscars Mad Mad: Fury Road won, being nominated for 10 and winning 6 including: Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Editing, Best make-up and hair, Best production design, and Best costume design, making it’s win percentage 60%, higher than the rest of the movies nominated for Oscars this year. I am also happy Ex Machina got a win, but no love for Star Wars, which I was fully expecting in all honesty.
