So the news broke recently that the yet untitled eighth episode in the Star Wars Saga has been delayed until December 2017. Yep, that’s right, Star Wars: Episode 8 has moved from it’s original May 26th 2017 release date, to December 15th 2017. This could have been done for a number of reasons, or a combined number of said reasons, and although we need to wait an extra 6 months to follow up on our new favourite Star-Warring characters, I’m actually pretty okay with this news.
Normally when a movie gets delayed we’re all pretty upset, angry, or both, however things are a little different when it comes to Star Wars, for me personally at least. Originally with the May 2017 release we only had to wait a year and a half for the next installment in the Star Wars Saga, which is crazy when you think about how long it takes sequels to come out normally (cough, Avatar, cough), so waiting another 6 months for this movie isn’t all that bad when you consider it is only 2 years since The Force Awakens was released as opposed to the 3 years or more with previous Star Wars movies. For me the extra 6 months wait is the only downside to this, the actual delay gives me a little bit of hope and excitement to think that they are actually putting more time and effort into this movie.
The response to The Force Awakens was overwhelmingly positive, not only with fans and critics, but you can see just how much by the box office numbers, and I believe that part of the reason they moved it to December is because of how well Episode 7 done in that month. December will now be officially owned by Star Wars for the foreseeable future as Rogue One is set to follow The Force Awakens this December. I do also believe however that Rian Johnson has delivered a script that Disney and Lucasfilm are happy with, but due to how popular the new characters are, they have asked him to slightly rework it in order to get these new characters more time on screen and to make them an even bigger presence, on top of new characters joining the franchise such as Benicio Del Toro’s yet unknown character (c’mon sexy bounty hunter or Admiral Thrawn). I also fully believe that they are going to take these extra 6 months to make the best movie that they possibly can, and by going how well received The Force Awakens was, they have a pretty big job on their plate that I have full confidence that they will be able to pull off.
I do not believe that this delay is due to anything negative or sinister. I believe everything over at Disney and Lucasfilm is running smoothly like a well-oiled machine and this delay can only mean good things for Star Wars. If it was delayed any longer then I might start to have a bit of a rant, but I’m willing to wait an extra 6 months for an even better movie.
